STARTING STRONG: A LEADERSHIP PERSPECTIVE FOR EARLY CAREERS IN FINANCIAL SERVICES
Starting a career in financial services can feel complex, but the right guidance makes all the difference. For many fresh graduates, the questions are often the same: What skills matter most? How do I stand out? Where do I even begin? Building a strong foundation early can shape not just your first role, but your long-term career trajectory. With the right mindset, skill set, and approach, young professionals can position themselves to create meaningful impact from day one. In this edition, we share insights from Ugochi Obi, Leading X-Academy at NGX, who offers a practical leadership perspective on navigating the early stages of a career in the financial services industry. 1. What foundational skills are essential for meaningful contribution? To thrive in the financial and capital markets space, focus on building a balanced skill set. Strong analytical thinking helps you make sense of complex data, while effective communication ensures your ideas are clearly understood. A solid grasp of market fundamentals, how the system works, key instruments, and core concepts, gives you the confidence to navigate the industry. At the same time, digital proficiency, especially in tools like Excel, improves your efficiency and output. Beyond technical skills, what truly sets you apart is ownership. Paying attention to detail, taking accountability, and consistently delivering high-quality work builds trust early in your career. 2. How can a fresh graduate stand out in their first role? Standing out isn’t about doing the most, it’s about being intentional. Adopt a mindset of continuous learning. Take the initiative to understand your role beyond the basics. Ask thoughtful questions, stay curious, and don’t wait to be told what to do before adding value. Equally important is how you show up. A strong work ethic, willingness to embrace challenges, and active participation in knowledge-sharing and networking opportunities can significantly accelerate your growth and visibility. 3. What challenges should new entrants expect, and how can they prepare? Transitioning into the workforce often comes with a learning curve. Time management, adapting to a new environment, and understanding workplace culture are common hurdles. The key is to stay organized, open-minded, and receptive to feedback. Those who succeed early are typically those who are willing to learn, unlearn, relearn, and adapt quickly. A proactive attitude makes the transition smoother and positions you for long-term success. 4. How can young professionals build confidence and find their voice? Confidence doesn’t appear overnight, it is built through preparation and consistency. Start by strengthening your knowledge base and preparing ahead for tasks and conversations. Contribute thoughtfully, even if in small ways at first. Over time, these consistent actions build both competence and confidence. Adopting a solution-oriented mindset also helps you stand out. When you approach problems with clarity and purpose, your voice naturally becomes stronger and more impactful. 5. What advice would you give your younger self starting out? Focus on the long game. Invest time in understanding the broader capital market ecosystem. Commit to continuous learning and be deliberate about how you position your career over time. Stay adaptable, this industry evolves quickly, and those who evolve with it stay ahead. Most importantly, make the most of every opportunity to learn, build skills, and create value. Final Thought Your future doesn’t start years from now, it starts with how you show up today. Be curious. Be intentional.

THRIVING THROUGH CHANGE: A LEADERSHIP PERSPECTIVE ON NAVIGATING THE FUTURE OF WORK
The workplace is evolving faster than ever. Advances in technology, changing business needs, and new ways of working are transforming how professionals build careers and how organisations create value. In this environment, staying relevant requires more than expertise in your field. It requires curiosity, adaptability, continuous learning, and the ability to embrace new opportunities for growth. Professionals who remain open to change, develop new skills, and strengthen their ability to think critically are better equipped to navigate uncertainty and make meaningful contributions in an evolving workplace. In this edition, we share insights from Ademola Adebayo, Group Chief Human Resource & Coordination Officer at NGX Group, who offers a leadership perspective on the mindset and capabilities professionals need to thrive in today’s dynamic world of work. 1. Why has adaptability become such a critical skill for professionals across industries? Adaptability is the ability to embrace change, remain flexible, and continuously develop yourself as workplace demands evolve. The reality of today’s workplace is that change is constant. New technologies, evolving business models, and shifting expectations mean that professionals must be willing to learn, unlearn, and relearn. Adaptability allows individuals to take on new responsibilities, navigate transitions effectively, and remain valuable in changing environments. Beyond responding to change, it enables professionals to identify opportunities within change and continue growing throughout their careers. 2. What role does technology and digital transformation play in shaping the future of work? Technology and digital transformation are reshaping how organisations operate, make decisions, and deliver value. They are enabling businesses to improve efficiency, enhance collaboration, and leverage data to make smarter decisions. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence are creating opportunities across areas such as research, data analysis, workforce planning, and predictive decision-making. However, technology is most effective when combined with human capabilities such as creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and sound judgment. Professionals who embrace technology and continue Developing their digital skills will be better positioned to navigate the future of work and contribute meaningfully in their organisations. 3. What mindset shifts are necessary for individuals and organisations looking to thrive in an evolving workplace? Thriving in an evolving workplace begins with adopting a growth mindset. While adaptability is essential, professionals must also develop the ability to think deeply, analyse situations, and make informed decisions. Critical thinking helps individuals move beyond simply responding to tasks and enables them to contribute solutions that create impact. Individuals and organisations that remain curious, open to learning, and willing to challenge existing ways of working are better positioned to solve complex problems and create sustainable value. 4. Can you share an experience where adapting to change positively impacted your career? A defining experience in my career was navigating the transition from the Nigerian Stock Exchange to Nigerian Exchange Group. The transformation required me to step beyond my traditional HR responsibilities and take on opportunities that expanded my perspective and capabilities. One example was chairing the Business Continuity Committee, despite not having a formal background in risk or business continuity management. It was an opportunity that required me to learn quickly, engage different perspectives, and apply critical thinking to deliver effectively. That experience reinforced the importance of embracing unfamiliar challenges. Growth often happens when we are willing to step outside our comfort zones, learn continuously, and approach new responsibilities with an open mind. 5. What advice would you give to professionals who may feel overwhelmed by the pace of change in today’s workplace? Change is an inevitable part of today’s workplace, and the ability to adapt is what helps professionals remain relevant. My advice is to embrace change as an opportunity for growth. Be intentional about developing yourself, seek opportunities to learn new skills, and remain open to experiences that challenge you. Professionals who actively engage with change and position themselves as contributors to improvement are better equipped to navigate uncertainty and build resilient careers. Final Thought The future of work belongs to those who are willing to evolve. Stay curious. Keep learning. Embrace change. Because staying relevant starts with the willingness to grow. First 100 DAYS AT NGX GROUP
...Mofopefoluwa Reflects on Learning, Growth and Purpose. In the capital market, the first 100 days after a listing tell you a lot about a stock: how it trades, how it handles volatility, and whether the market believes in its fundamentals. The same is true of a new hire. The first 100 days set the tone for the journey ahead, full of new experiences, fresh perspectives, and opportunities to grow while making meaningful contributions. For Mofopefoluwa Alabi, "listing" at Nigerian Exchange Group has been exactly that: a debut marked by continuous learning, collaboration, and purpose at the very heart of Nigeria's capital market. As she crosses her first 100-day milestone, she reflects on the lessons and experiences that have shaped her journey so far. Spoiler: the fundamentals are strong, and the outlook is decidedly bullish. How would you describe your first 100 days at Nigerian Exchange Group? My first 100 days at NGX Group have been an exciting blend of learning, challenge and professional growth. Joining during the extension of trading hours and the transition to the T+1 settlement cycle made the experience particularly unique, I essentially arrived just as the market was picking up pace, and I had to match its speed. Adapting to the responsibilities of market surveillance came with a steep learning curve, steeper than any yield curve I had studied in Accounting, but the support and guidance of my colleagues made the climb much easier. These first 100 days have sharpened my analytical skills, deepened my understanding of the capital market, and reinforced my passion for protecting the integrity and growth of Nigeria's financial markets. What has been the biggest challenge you have faced at NGX Group, and how did you approach it? One of my biggest challenges was learning the language of the capital market. While I was familiar with general financial concepts, market surveillance introduced me to technical terms and industry-specific concepts that were entirely new to me. At times, it genuinely felt like learning a new language, one where the vocabulary changes with every trading session. Rather than feeling overwhelmed, I treated it like any good analyst treats an unfamiliar stock: I did my due diligence. I asked questions, took notes, and learnt continuously from colleagues who were always generous with their knowledge. One thing I have realised is that in this market, learning never closes. There is no closing gong on curiosity, the capital market is constantly evolving, and staying inquisitive is essential to growing in this role. What achievement are you most proud of during your first 100 days? How quickly my confidence appreciated in value. Within a short period, I moved from observing to independently analysing trading activities, preparing reports, and contributing meaningfully to the team's surveillance processes. In surveillance, we are essentially the market's watchdogs, the quiet guarantors of a fair and orderly market. Knowing that my work supports market integrity and helps sustain investor confidence gives me a strong sense of purpose. It has been incredibly fulfilling to watch my own growth chart trend steadily upward. What advice would you give to someone joining NGX Group today? Stay curious and diversify your learning portfolio. NGX Group is an organisation where growth comes from asking questions, staying open to new ideas, and collaborating with the people around you. Your colleagues are blue-chip assets, reliable, generous with dividends of knowledge, and always worth investing time in. Never hesitate to seek guidance or learn from their experience. If you approach every day with a willingness to learn, adapt, and contribute, your professional growth will outperform your own projections. Outside work, what's something colleagues might be surprised to learn about you? I am passionate about financial literacy, particularly helping young people make informed financial decisions. Think of it as early-stage investing, except the asset class is people. Through school engagements, community outreach, training programmes, and mentorship, I enjoy equipping young adults with the knowledge they need to build healthy financial habits and secure their financial futures. Seeing the compounding effect of those conversations is one of the most rewarding things I do outside work. Working remotely or working from the office? Working remotely! Lagos traffic has more volatility than any index I monitor, so I certainly appreciate the flexibility that remote work offers. That said, there is something special about being in the office, the collaboration, the exchange of ideas, and the connection with colleagues make every day worthwhile. Call it a balanced portfolio: a healthy allocation to both. Complete this sentence: My first 100 days at NGX Group have taught me that... "…every detail matters. Stay curious, keep your mind sharp and never stop learning." Looking Ahead The first 100 days are an important milestone, but in market terms, this is only the opening session. For Mofopefoluwa, the journey ahead is one of continued learning, professional development, and meaningful impact within an organisation committed to strengthening Nigeria's capital market. If early trading is any indication, this is one growth story worth watching. Now it is your turn. Tell us about your journey by exploring the "Pitch Yourself" section below.
