About
The workplace is evolving faster than ever. Advances in technology, changing business needs, and new ways of working are transforming how professionals build careers and how organisations create value. In this environment, staying relevant requires more than expertise in your field. It requires curiosity, adaptability, continuous learning, and the ability to embrace new opportunities for growth. Professionals who remain open to change, develop new skills, and strengthen their ability to think critically are better equipped to navigate uncertainty and make meaningful contributions in an evolving workplace. In this edition, we share insights from Ademola Adebayo, Group Chief Human Resource & Coordination Officer at NGX Group, who offers a leadership perspective on the mindset and capabilities professionals need to thrive in today’s dynamic world of work. 1. Why has adaptability become such a critical skill for professionals across industries? Adaptability is the ability to embrace change, remain flexible, and continuously develop yourself as workplace demands evolve. The reality of today’s workplace is that change is constant. New technologies, evolving business models, and shifting expectations mean that professionals must be willing to learn, unlearn, and relearn. Adaptability allows individuals to take on new responsibilities, navigate transitions effectively, and remain valuable in changing environments. Beyond responding to change, it enables professionals to identify opportunities within change and continue growing throughout their careers. 2. What role does technology and digital transformation play in shaping the future of work? Technology and digital transformation are reshaping how organisations operate, make decisions, and deliver value. They are enabling businesses to improve efficiency, enhance collaboration, and leverage data to make smarter decisions. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence are creating opportunities across areas such as research, data analysis, workforce planning, and predictive decision-making. However, technology is most effective when combined with human capabilities such as creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and sound judgment. Professionals who embrace technology and continue Developing their digital skills will be better positioned to navigate the future of work and contribute meaningfully in their organisations. 3. What mindset shifts are necessary for individuals and organisations looking to thrive in an evolving workplace? Thriving in an evolving workplace begins with adopting a growth mindset. While adaptability is essential, professionals must also develop the ability to think deeply, analyse situations, and make informed decisions. Critical thinking helps individuals move beyond simply responding to tasks and enables them to contribute solutions that create impact. Individuals and organisations that remain curious, open to learning, and willing to challenge existing ways of working are better positioned to solve complex problems and create sustainable value. 4. Can you share an experience where adapting to change positively impacted your career? A defining experience in my career was navigating the transition from the Nigerian Stock Exchange to Nigerian Exchange Group. The transformation required me to step beyond my traditional HR responsibilities and take on opportunities that expanded my perspective and capabilities. One example was chairing the Business Continuity Committee, despite not having a formal background in risk or business continuity management. It was an opportunity that required me to learn quickly, engage different perspectives, and apply critical thinking to deliver effectively. That experience reinforced the importance of embracing unfamiliar challenges. Growth often happens when we are willing to step outside our comfort zones, learn continuously, and approach new responsibilities with an open mind. 5. What advice would you give to professionals who may feel overwhelmed by the pace of change in today’s workplace? Change is an inevitable part of today’s workplace, and the ability to adapt is what helps professionals remain relevant. My advice is to embrace change as an opportunity for growth. Be intentional about developing yourself, seek opportunities to learn new skills, and remain open to experiences that challenge you. Professionals who actively engage with change and position themselves as contributors to improvement are better equipped to navigate uncertainty and build resilient careers. Final Thought The future of work belongs to those who are willing to evolve. Stay curious. Keep learning. Embrace change. Because staying relevant starts with the willingness to grow.
